TOEIC Part5「相関接続詞」の解き方と頻出パターン｜練習10問つき

相関接続詞の問題は、ペアで使う接続詞の片方が空所になるタイプです。文中に or / nor / and / but also のどれがあるかを見れば、もう片方が決まります。

解き方のポイント

both A and B（AもBも）
either A or B（AかBのどちらか）
neither A nor B（AもBも〜ない）
not only A but (also) B（AだけでなくBも）
whether A or B（AであろうとBであろうと）

ひっかけ注意

neither と nor、either と or の組み合わせを崩さない
not only が文頭に出ると倒置（Not only did she ~）
A と B は同じ形（名詞と名詞、動詞と動詞）にそろえる

例文で確認

Payment can be made either online or by phone.	or がある → either

The 'not only' at the start of the sentence pairs with 'but', forming 'not only A but also B' (not only A but B too), so 'but' is correct. 'And', 'or', and 'so' don't combine with this construction. Note that when 'Not only' is fronted, the following clause is inverted, as in 'did the product sell'.

Since the sentence opens with 'Neither', the correlative conjunction pattern 'neither A nor B' is triggered, so 'nor' is correct. 'Or' pairs with 'either'. 'And' and 'but' don't pair with 'neither'. Note that when 'neither A nor B' is the subject, the verb agrees with B (here, 'the assistant', so 'was' is correct as written).
