In 1989, a British hiker named Roger Mercer was walking in the Scottish Highlands when he lost one of his woolen socks while crossing a stream.

As he reached down to retrieve it from a crevice between rocks, he noticed something unusual: small pieces of pottery.

Curious, he dug a little deeper and found more fragments.

Mercer, an amateur archaeology enthusiast, reported his find to experts.

When archaeologists investigated the site, they discovered the remains of a previously unknown Iron Age settlement dating back 2,500 years.

The settlement, now known as Glenshee Village, turned out to be one of the best-preserved ancient highland villages ever found in Scotland.

All because a man lost his sock.

The site has since yielded over 1,000 artifacts and significantly changed our understanding of prehistoric Scottish highland life.
