For over a century, Sandy Island appeared on maps and charts in the Coral Sea between Australia and New Caledonia.

Measuring about 25 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, it was included in various publications including National Geographic maps and Google Earth.

French explorers reportedly discovered it in 1876, and it continued to appear on navigation charts through the 20th century.

However, in 2012, an Australian research vessel sailed directly to the island's reported location and found something surprising: nothing but open ocean.

The island simply didn't exist.

Scientists concluded that the original error was probably made by the French explorer and then copied onto subsequent maps for generations.

In November 2012, Sandy Island was officially "undiscovered" and removed from all modern maps and charts.
