Within days, Heimaey was completely surrounded by ice walls up to 15 meters high.
The 5,000 residents found themselves trapped, with all boats unable to reach the harbor.
Food supplies began running low, and the situation became critical.
Finally, the Icelandic government called for help, and the US Navy sent an icebreaker ship that managed to create a small channel through the ice wall.
It took three weeks to completely free the village, during which time supplies were airlifted to the stranded residents.
