In western Madagascar, there is a forest made not of trees but of sharp stone spikes.

Some of these limestone needles are as tall as a thirty-story building.

The local name is often translated as the place where you cannot walk barefoot.

The limestone formed long ago on the floor of an ancient sea and was later lifted up.

Over millions of years, heavy rain dissolved the rock along cracks, carving deep canyons and razor-sharp edges.

Because the spikes are so hard to cross, they protect many rare plants and animals.

Lemurs leap from peak to peak, and some species live nowhere else on Earth.
