砂漠に描かれた泳ぐ人
エジプト南西部、リビア国境に近いギルフ・ケビール台地の南縁にある「泳ぐ人の洞窟」（ワディ・スーラ）は、1933年に探検家ラースロー・アルマーシらによって知られるようになった岩陰で、泳いでいるような姿勢の人物像が描かれています。描かれたのは約9000〜6000年前の新石器時代とされます。この時期は「アフリカ湿潤期」と呼ばれ、地球の公転軌道や地軸の傾きのわずかな変化で北半球の夏の日射が強まり、モンスーンの雨が北アフリカの奥まで届きました。サハラには草原や湖、川が広がり、人々は牛の放牧や狩猟をしていたことが、岩絵や湖の堆積物からわかっています。約5000年前ごろに雨の帯が南へ戻ると、湖は干上がり、現在の砂漠になりました。人物像が本当に泳ぐ姿かどうかには異論もあります。この洞窟は小説・映画『イングリッシュ・ペイシェント』の舞台にもなりました。

In a remote corner of the Sahara in southwestern Egypt, there is a shallow cave with paintings on its walls.
The small human figures in them seem to be swimming.
Today the nearest lake is hundreds of kilometers away, and it almost never rains there.
But the paintings were made between about nine thousand and six thousand years ago.
In that period, changes in the Earth's orbit brought heavier summer rains to North Africa.
The Sahara was then a green land of grass, rivers and lakes, where people herded cattle and hunted.
As the rains moved south again, the lakes dried up and the sand returned.
