星空のように光る洞窟

ニュージーランド北島のワイトモ洞窟などに生息するツチボタル（学名アラクノカンパ・ルミノーサ）は、キノコバエの仲間の幼虫で、ミミズなどの「虫」ではありません。幼虫は洞窟の天井に絹の巣を作り、粘液の粒をつけた糸を何十本も垂らします。洞窟にすむ個体の糸は最大50センチほどになります。尾部の発光器官で青緑色の光を出し、引き寄せられた小さな昆虫が糸にかかると、糸をたぐり寄せて食べます。空腹のときほど強く光ることが知られています。ワイトモ洞窟では、ボートに乗って暗闇の中で光る天井を見上げるツアーが行われ、ニュージーランドを代表する観光地になっています。

The lights are made by glowworms, which are not really worms but the young of a small fly.

Each one hangs dozens of silk threads beneath itself, like fishing lines.

The threads are covered in sticky drops that shine in the blue glow.

Small flying insects are attracted to the light and get caught in the threads.

The glowworm then slowly pulls the line up and eats its catch.

The hungrier a glowworm is, the brighter it shines.
