Near the city of Krakow in Poland, salt was mined underground for more than seven hundred years.

Over time, the miners dug nine levels of tunnels, reaching more than three hundred meters below the surface.

During their long shifts in the dark, they carved statues and chapels out of the rock salt around them.

The largest chapel took them about seventy years to complete.

Even its floor, its altar and the chandeliers hanging from its ceiling are made of salt.

Commercial mining ended in 1996 because of falling salt prices and flooding.

The mine is now a museum, and more than a million people visit it every year.
