断崖にぶら下がる寺
中国山西省大同市の恒山のふもとにある懸空寺は、断崖の中腹、地上約75メートル（諸説あり）に建てられた寺院です。言い伝えでは北魏末期の491年に僧の了然が建立を始めたとされ、1500年以上の歴史があると言われます。仏教・道教・儒教の三教を合わせて祀る珍しい寺で、40ほどの堂が桟道と階段で結ばれています。建物は、岩壁に穿った穴に差し込んだオークなどの横木の梁によって支えられており、床下に見える細い柱は後世に追加されたもので、構造上の役割は小さいとされています。上に張り出した岩が雨や雪をさえぎり、谷の地形が強い日差しの時間を短くするため、木造建築が長く保たれてきたと説明されています。

According to tradition, it was founded more than fifteen hundred years ago.
Its wooden halls are connected by narrow walkways and stairs.
It seems to hang in the air, but its weight actually rests on wooden beams set deep into holes in the rock.
The thin poles under the floors were added later and carry very little of the load.
The overhanging cliff above shields the halls from rain and snow.
It is also said to protect them from the strongest sunlight of the day.
