綿の城と呼ばれる白い丘
トルコ南西部デニズリ県のパムッカレは、温泉水が造った石灰華（トラバーチン）の段丘で、トルコ語で「綿の城」を意味します。丘の上の泉から湧く温泉水は炭酸カルシウムを多く含み、地表に出て二酸化炭素が抜けると炭酸カルシウムが沈殿し、白い段丘と棚田のような水たまりが少しずつ造られてきました。丘の上には紀元前2世紀ごろからヘレニズム・ローマ時代の都市ヒエラポリスが栄え、温泉は病を治すと信じられて多くの人が訪れました。1988年にヒエラポリスとともにユネスコ世界遺産に登録されています。浸食や汚れを防ぐため、多くの段丘は立ち入りが制限され、歩ける場所でも裸足で歩くことが求められています。

In southwestern Turkey, a whole hillside is covered with white terraces that look like frozen waterfalls.
The place is called Pamukkale, which means cotton castle in Turkish.
Warm water rich in minerals rises from springs at the top of the hill.
As it flows down the slope, it releases a gas, and a white mineral is left behind.
Layer by layer, over thousands of years, this mineral has built pools and walls of hard white stone.
More than two thousand years ago, a city grew up beside the springs because people believed the water could heal them.
Today, visitors must take off their shoes to walk on the terraces.
