夜に光る湾
プエルトリコ本島の東に浮かぶビエケス島のモスキート湾は、生物発光する湾（バイオルミネセント・ベイ）として知られ、ギネス世界記録に「世界で最も明るい生物発光湾」として認定されています。光を発するのは渦鞭毛藻の一種ピロディニウム・バハメンセという単細胞の生物で、水が揺らされると青緑色の光を一瞬放ちます。湾の入り口が狭いため生物が外洋へ流されにくく、周囲のマングローブから供給される栄養が繁殖を支えています。2017年のハリケーン・マリアの後は光が大きく弱まりましたが、その後回復したと報告されています。保護のため、湾での遊泳は禁止され、カヤックなどでの見学も規制されています。

On the small island of Vieques in Puerto Rico, there is a bay where the water glows blue at night.
Every fish that swims and every raindrop that falls leaves a trail of light.
The light comes from tiny living things, each far too small to see without a microscope.
When the water around them is disturbed, they give off a short flash.
The bay has a very narrow entrance, so they are not washed out to sea.
The mangrove trees around the bay supply the food they need.
It has been called the brightest bay of its kind in the world.
