On the northern coast of Northern Ireland, about forty thousand stone columns step down into the sea.
Most of their tops are almost perfect hexagons, fitting together like the tiles of a floor.
A local legend says a giant built them as a road across the sea to Scotland.
The real builder was a volcano, around sixty million years ago.
A thick layer of lava flowed over the land and cooled very slowly.
As it cooled, it shrank and cracked into columns, in the same way mud cracks when it dries.
Waves are still slowly wearing the columns down today.
