In the dry west of Madagascar, the tallest trees look as if they had been planted upside down.
A baobab has a thick, smooth trunk that rises thirty meters before a few short branches spread out at the top like roots.
The swollen trunk is a reservoir.
During the brief rainy season, the tree absorbs water and stores thousands of liters in its soft, spongy wood.
It then survives the long dry months by shedding its leaves and drawing on this supply.
The trunk visibly shrinks as the water is consumed and expands again after rain.
Some of these trees are believed to be more than a thousand years old.
