In the twelfth century, a king in what is now Cambodia ordered the construction of an enormous temple.

Angkor Wat covers more than one and a half square kilometers and is regarded as the largest religious monument in the world.

It was built from several million blocks of sandstone, which had to be brought from a mountain about forty kilometers away.

For a long time, nobody could explain how so much stone was delivered in only a few decades.

Then researchers examining satellite images identified a network of ancient canals leading from the quarries toward the site.

The blocks were probably floated there on rafts.

A wide moat still surrounds the temple and helps to keep its foundations stable.
