The largest structure ever made by living creatures was not built by humans.

The Great Barrier Reef stretches for about twenty-three hundred kilometers along the northeastern coast of Australia.

It was constructed by coral polyps, soft animals only a few millimeters across.

Each polyp produces a tiny cup of limestone around itself, and new generations build on top of the old.

The present reef has been growing in this way for several thousand years.

Tiny plants living inside the coral supply most of its food and give it its color.

When the sea becomes too warm, the coral expels them and turns white.
