Near the city of Manaus in Brazil, two rivers meet but do not mix.
One is nearly black, colored by decaying leaves from the forest, and the other is pale brown with mud carried from the Andes.
For about six kilometers they flow side by side in the same channel with a sharp line between them.
The explanation lies in their differences.
The dark river is warmer and slower, while the pale one is cooler, faster and heavier with sediment.
Water of different temperature, speed and density does not blend easily.
Only far downstream do they finally combine to form the lower Amazon.
