The longest artificial waterway in the world runs for nearly eighteen hundred kilometers through eastern China.
Its oldest sections were dug in the fifth century BC.
About a thousand years later, an emperor ordered millions of laborers to connect them into a single route.
The great rivers of China flow from west to east, so the canal provided the first reliable link between the north and the south.
Its main purpose was to carry grain from the fertile south to the capital and the armies in the north.
Because the land rises along the way, engineers devised gates that lifted boats from one level to the next.
Parts of the Grand Canal are still crowded with barges today.
