On a night in March 1848, people living beside Niagara Falls were woken by an unfamiliar silence.
The roar of the water, which had never ceased within living memory, had stopped.
By morning the riverbed above the falls was almost dry, and fish lay stranded on the rocks.
Residents walked out onto the exposed bed and collected objects that had been lost in the river long before.
Many feared that something terrible was about to happen, and churches filled with worshippers.
The cause lay upstream, where strong winds had driven ice from Lake Erie into the mouth of the river and blocked it.
After roughly thirty hours the ice shifted, and the water came roaring back.
