Builders in the German city of Cologne laid the first stone of a new cathedral in 1248.

They completed the eastern end within a century, but the money ran out and work gradually came to a halt.

For about four hundred years, a wooden crane stood idle on top of the unfinished south tower and became a landmark of the city.

In the nineteenth century, the original medieval plans for the facade were rediscovered.

Construction resumed in 1842, and the builders followed those drawings closely.

The cathedral was finally completed in 1880, six hundred and thirty-two years after it was begun.
