In 1799, French soldiers rebuilding a fort in the Egyptian town of Rosetta uncovered a slab of dark stone covered with writing.
The same official announcement had been carved on it three times, in three different scripts.
One of them was ancient Greek, which scholars could read, and another was Egyptian hieroglyphs, which nobody had understood for about fourteen hundred years.
Scholars realized that the Greek text might serve as a key.
Even so, the task took more than two decades.
In 1822, a French scholar demonstrated that hieroglyphs represented sounds as well as ideas.
From that point, the inscriptions on Egyptian temples and tombs could be read again.
