In September 1940, four teenagers in southwestern France enlarged a hole in the ground and climbed down into a cave.

By the light of a lamp they saw horses, bulls and deer painted across the walls.

The paintings at Lascaux turned out to be about seventeen thousand years old.

After the cave was opened to the public, more than a thousand visitors entered every day.

Their breath raised the temperature and humidity, and mold and green algae began to spread over the images.

The cave was closed to the public in 1963, and it has remained closed ever since.

Visitors today walk through an exact copy built nearby, while the original is monitored by a small group of specialists.
