Every year, more than a million wildebeest travel in an enormous circle across the plains of Tanzania and Kenya.

They are accompanied by several hundred thousand zebras and gazelles.

The animals follow the rain, because rain produces the fresh grass on which they depend.

Early in the year, about half a million calves are born within a few weeks, and each one can stand within minutes of birth.

Later, the herds must cross rivers where crocodiles wait.

The complete route is roughly eight hundred kilometers long.

It has no beginning and no end, since the animals simply continue as long as the grass keeps growing ahead of them.
