In the city of Jaipur in India stands a sundial as tall as a nine-story building.
It was completed in 1734 by a ruler who was also a dedicated astronomer.
He distrusted the small brass instruments of his time and believed that larger ones made of stone would be more precise.
The shadow of its sloping wall falls on a curved scale marked with fine lines, and it moves about one millimeter every second.
As a result, the local time can be read to within two seconds.
The ruler constructed nineteen instruments on the site to measure the positions of the sun, moon and stars.
Nearly three centuries later, they still function.
