In 1954, a typhoon sank a ferry crossing the strait between the two largest islands of Japan, and more than a thousand people died.

The disaster strengthened demands for a tunnel beneath the sea.

Construction was extremely difficult because the rock was fractured and seawater repeatedly flooded the workings.

Engineers had to dig a hundred meters below the seabed, which itself lies a hundred and forty meters under the surface.

The Seikan Tunnel finally opened in 1988, more than two decades after digging began.

It is nearly fifty-four kilometers long, and twenty-three kilometers of it run under the sea.

Trains now pass through it in about half an hour, regardless of the weather.
