Nearly a thousand stone statues stand on Easter Island, a remote island in the Pacific Ocean.
Most were carved from the rock of a single volcano, yet many were erected kilometers away along the coast.
How the islanders transported them without wheels or large animals puzzled researchers for generations.
Local tradition insists that the statues walked.
In 2012, a team tested this idea with a replica weighing more than four tons.
Eighteen people, pulling three ropes alternately, rocked the upright figure from side to side so that it advanced a little with each movement.
It traveled a hundred meters in under an hour, which suggests that the tradition may be accurate.
