The longest fence in the world runs for about five thousand six hundred kilometers across Australia.

It was begun in the 1880s to keep wild dogs called dingoes away from sheep in the southeast.

The wire fence is nearly two meters high and continues underground so that animals cannot dig beneath it.

Workers patrol it constantly, repairing damage caused by floods, drifting sand and kangaroos.

The fence largely succeeded in protecting the sheep, but it also altered the land.

With few dingoes to hunt them, kangaroos multiplied on the protected side and ate much of the vegetation.

The difference between the two sides can now be detected from space.
