In 1812, a Swiss traveler disguised as an Arab merchant persuaded a guide to lead him through a narrow canyon in southern Jordan.

At the end of it stood a temple-like building carved directly into a cliff of pink sandstone.

He had reached Petra, a city that the outside world had forgotten for roughly a thousand years.

It had been the capital of the Nabataeans, who grew wealthy by controlling the trade in spices and incense.

Their engineers cut channels and built reservoirs to collect the little rain that fell, which allowed thousands of people to live in the desert.

After trade routes shifted and earthquakes struck, the city was gradually abandoned.

Most of it has still not been excavated.
