世界の淡水の5分の1をたたえる湖
バイカル湖はロシア・シベリア南東部にある湖で、最大水深は1642メートルと世界一深く、容積は約2万3600立方キロで、地表の凍っていない淡水の約20%に当たります。地殻が引き裂かれてできた地溝帯にあり、およそ2500万年前に形成された世界最古の湖とされ、現在も年に約2センチの割合で広がっています。330本以上の川が流入しますが、流出するのはアンガラ川だけです。透明度が高く、冬から春には約40メートルに達します。固有種が非常に多く、淡水にすむ唯一のアザラシであるバイカルアザラシや、深海性の魚ゴロミャンカなどが知られます。冬は1月から5月ごろまで結氷し、氷の厚さは1メートルを超え、かつては氷上に道路や鉄道が敷かれました。1996年にユネスコ世界自然遺産に登録されました。

Lake Baikal in Siberia contains about a fifth of all the unfrozen fresh water on the surface of the earth.
It is the deepest lake in the world, reaching more than sixteen hundred meters, and at roughly twenty-five million years it is also the oldest.
More than three hundred rivers flow into it, but only one flows out.
The water is so clear that objects can be seen forty meters below the surface.
Most of the animals living there, including a species of freshwater seal, are found nowhere else.
In winter the surface freezes into ice thick enough to support trucks.
The lake is still widening by about two centimeters a year.
