About a fifth of the Netherlands was once under water, and one entire province did not exist a century ago.

In 1932, engineers completed a dam thirty-two kilometers long that separated a shallow bay from the North Sea.

Sections of the enclosed water were then surrounded by dikes and pumped dry.

It took several years for the salt to wash out of the soil before crops could be grown.

Roads, farms and whole towns were planned in advance on land that had recently been the sea floor.

In 1986, the reclaimed area officially became the province of Flevoland.

Its largest section is considered the biggest artificial island in the world.
