In 1997, a curious mystery caught the attention of people living on the west coast of North America.

Thousands of plastic bath toys, including yellow ducks, blue turtles, red beavers, and green frogs, began washing up on beaches from Alaska to Oregon.

These toys had been lost at sea five years earlier when a cargo ship traveling from Hong Kong to Tacoma, Washington encountered a storm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

During the storm, several shipping containers fell overboard, including one containing 28,800 plastic bath toys.

Oceanographers realized this accident presented a unique opportunity to study ocean currents.

They encouraged beachcombers to report any toy sightings, helping scientists create more accurate models of how objects move across the ocean.

Some of the toys even made it all the way to the Atlantic Ocean through Arctic waters, traveling over 17,000 miles in over 15 years.
