A few times a year, the sea between two islands off the southwestern coast of South Korea draws back and exposes a strip of land.

The path is nearly three kilometers long and remains above water for about an hour.

Thousands of people walk along it from Jindo toward the small island of Modo, and some gather shellfish on the way.

According to a local legend, the sea opened in answer to the prayers of an old woman who had been separated from her family.

The actual cause is an unusually low tide.

The event attracted little attention abroad until 1975, when a French ambassador described it in a newspaper.

It is now celebrated with an annual festival.
