In 1911, a geologist exploring Antarctica came across a glacier with a dark red stain running down its white face.
The feature became known as Blood Falls.
For decades, the color was attributed to red algae, but the actual cause proved to be different.
Beneath the glacier lies extremely salty water that has been sealed off from air and sunlight for perhaps more than a million years.
The water is rich in iron, and when it seeps out and meets the air, the iron rusts and turns red.
Its salt content prevents it from freezing.
Microbes survive in this water without light or oxygen, which interests researchers who study whether life could exist on other planets.
