Each autumn, millions of monarch butterflies leave Canada and the United States and fly to a few mountain forests in central Mexico.

Some of them travel nearly five thousand kilometers.

They spend the winter clustered on fir trees in such numbers that branches bend under their weight.

What is remarkable is that none of these butterflies has ever made the journey before.

An ordinary monarch survives for only a few weeks, so the return trip north is completed by several generations in succession.

The generation that flies south is an exception and can live for about eight months.

It somehow locates the same forests that its great-grandparents left.
