High in the Andes of Peru, a bridge made entirely of grass hangs across a deep river gorge.

It is the last surviving example of the rope bridges that once connected the roads of the Inca empire.

Because grass weakens quickly, the bridge is replaced every June.

Families from four nearby communities twist a tough mountain grass into thin cords, which are then braided into heavy cables.

The old bridge is cut loose and allowed to fall into the river, and the new one is completed within three days.

No modern tools or materials are used.

The knowledge has been handed down for at least five hundred years.
