In the 1960s, the construction of a large dam on the Nile threatened to flood two temples that had stood at Abu Simbel for more than three thousand years.

UNESCO appealed for international assistance, and about fifty countries contributed.

Between 1964 and 1968, engineers cut the temples into more than a thousand blocks, each weighing up to thirty tons.

The blocks were lifted sixty-five meters up the hillside and reassembled in precisely the same arrangement.

An artificial hill was constructed behind them to imitate the original cliff.

The former site now lies beneath the lake.

The project later helped to inspire the creation of the World Heritage list.
