In November 1963, the crew of a fishing boat off the southern coast of Iceland noticed smoke rising from the sea.

An underwater volcano was erupting, and within days a new island had emerged above the waves.

The eruption lasted until 1967, and the island was named Surtsey.

Scientists recognized a rare opportunity and persuaded the government to prohibit ordinary visitors.

Since then, only a small number of researchers have been permitted to land, and they must ensure that they bring no seeds with them.

The first plant was recorded in 1965, and birds, insects and seals followed.

Surtsey shows how life establishes itself on entirely new land.
