沈んだ森の上に建つ街

ヴェネツィアの建物の多くは、潟の軟弱な泥を貫いて下の固い粘土層(カラント)まで打ち込まれた木杭の上に建てられています。用材にはハンノキ、オーク、カラマツ、マツ、ニレなどが使われ、杭の上に木の板と石灰岩(イストリア石)の基礎が重ねられました。杭は水と泥の中に完全に埋まっているため酸素が乏しく、木を分解する菌類などが活動しにくいことが、長く保たれてきた主な理由です。加えて、水や堆積物に含まれる鉱物が木に浸透して硬化させたとされています。17世紀に建てられたサンタ・マリア・デッラ・サルーテ聖堂には100万本を超える杭が使われたと伝えられています。近年は、嫌気性の細菌による緩やかな劣化も研究で報告されています。

Venice rests on millions of wooden posts driven into the mud of a lagoon.

Beginning more than a thousand years ago, builders pushed trunks of oak, larch and alder through the soft ground until they reached a firmer layer of clay.

Stone foundations were then laid on top of them.

Wood normally decays, but these posts are completely submerged, so the organisms that cause rot cannot obtain the oxygen they require.

Minerals in the water have gradually hardened the timber as well.

A single church, Santa Maria della Salute, is said to stand on more than a million posts.

Much of the city is therefore supported by a forest that nobody can see.
