Every twenty years, the main buildings of Ise Jingu, one of the most sacred shrines in Japan, are taken down and rebuilt on an adjacent plot.

The practice began in the year 690 and, apart from an interruption during a period of civil war, it has continued ever since.

The most recent rebuilding, in 2013, was the sixty-second.

Carpenters use Japanese cypress and join the timber without nails, following methods that have hardly changed.

Because the work is repeated once in each generation, experienced craftsmen can pass their skills directly to younger ones.

Timber from the old buildings is not wasted; it is distributed to other shrines across the country.

As a result, the shrine is at once ancient and almost new.
