In 1831, a group of sailors from the HMS Challenger discovered something remarkable on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland: 78 chess pieces carved from walrus ivory.

The Lewis Chessmen, as they came to be known, were likely created in Norway around the 12th century.

These pieces are notable for their expressive faces and detailed designs.

The kings sit on thrones with swords across their laps, the queens hold their heads in apparent dismay, and the knights ride small horses.

The most distinctive pieces are the rooks, which are depicted as berserkers, fierce Viking warriors biting their shields in battle rage.

Historians believe the chessmen were buried by a merchant traveling from Norway to Ireland.
