On an island in the Arabian Sea grows a tree that resembles an umbrella turned inside out.

Its dense canopy is shaped that way for a practical reason: the branches collect moisture from the frequent mist and direct it down the trunk to the roots, which enables the tree to survive where annual rainfall is minimal.

When the bark is cut, it releases a deep red resin, and merchants have exported this substance for medicine and dye since ancient times.

Approximately a third of the plant species on the island exist nowhere else.

The trees are currently in decline, because young ones are consumed by goats and cannot become established.
