When two spacecraft departed for the outer planets in 1977, each carried a gold-plated record.

A committee selected the contents in a matter of weeks: greetings in fifty-five languages, music ranging from Bach to Chuck Berry, and recordings of rain, whales and a human heartbeat.

Diagrams engraved on the cover indicate the position of our sun relative to fourteen pulsars, so that any finder could determine where the craft originated.

Both probes have subsequently left the solar system.

The nearest star they will approach is approximately forty thousand years away, and the records are anticipated to remain readable considerably longer than that.
