In Utah, a forest of forty-seven thousand trees is in fact a single organism.
Every trunk shares an identical genetic profile and is connected underground by one root system that covers roughly forty-three hectares.
Individual trunks live about one hundred and thirty years, but the organism as a whole is estimated to be several thousand years old, and some researchers propose a considerably higher figure.
It reproduces by sending up new shoots rather than by seed.
The forest is currently in decline, because deer and cattle consume the young shoots before they can mature, so most sections contain no replacement trees at all.
