In southern Africa stand the remains of a city built entirely without mortar.

Between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, craftspeople cut granite into regular blocks and stacked them so precisely that the walls have stood for six hundred years without any binding material.

The largest enclosure has walls eleven meters high and five meters thick at the base.

Gold and glass beads recovered from the site demonstrate that the city traded with merchants as distant as China.

European visitors in the nineteenth century refused to accept that local people had constructed it and attributed it to foreigners.

Archaeological evidence has since established otherwise, and the modern nation adopted the site's name.
