In northeastern Ethiopia lies a basin that sits more than one hundred meters below sea level.
The annual average temperature exceeds thirty-four degrees Celsius, which makes it one of the hottest inhabited locations on earth.
Springs continuously push mineral-rich water to the surface, where it evaporates and deposits yellow, green and orange crusts of salt and sulfur.
The landscape resembles a chemical laboratory rather than a desert.
Despite conditions that would eliminate most organisms, microbes survive in the acidic pools, and biologists examine them in order to determine what the limits of life actually are.
The Afar people have extracted salt here by hand for centuries and transport it out by camel.
