In July 1518, a woman in Strasbourg began to dance in the street and continued for days.

Within a week dozens had joined her, and within a month the number had reportedly reached four hundred.

Contemporary documents record that several participants collapsed and some died.

The authorities consulted physicians, who concluded that the cause was natural rather than spiritual, and prescribed more dancing.

They cleared halls and hired musicians, which appears to have made the situation considerably worse.

Modern proposals include poisoning by a fungus that grows on rye, and mass psychogenic illness triggered by famine and disease.

No explanation is generally accepted.
