One of the strangest medieval stories comes from 12th century England.

According to chronicles written by Ralph of Coggeshall and William of Newburgh, two children with green skin suddenly appeared in the village of Woolpit in Suffolk.

The children, a boy and a girl, spoke an unknown language and would only eat green beans.

The boy soon became sick and died, but the girl survived and eventually lost her green color.

After learning English, she explained that she and her brother came from a place called "St. Martin's Land," where everything was green and the sun never shone.

They had been herding their father's cattle when they heard a loud noise and suddenly found themselves in Woolpit.

Historians have proposed various explanations for this story, from malnourished orphans with a skin condition to an imaginative folktale about outsiders.
