1300メートルで沈んだ軍艦
ヴァーサ号（Vasa）は実在した軍艦で、ストックホルムのヴァーサ号博物館に展示されています。グスタフ2世アドルフの命により建造され、1628年8月10日の処女航海でストックホルム港内を約1300m航行した直後、突風を受けて転覆・沈没しました。原因は重心が高すぎたことにあり、建造中に上部砲甲板が追加されたことが指摘されています。事前の復原性試験（30人が甲板上を走る試験）で問題が明らかになりながら中止された記録があり、国王の意向に反する進言が困難だった状況が背景にあるとされます。バルト海は塩分濃度が低く、木材を食害するフナクイムシが生息しないため船体は良好に保存され、1961年に引き揚げられました。現存部材の約95%が建造当時のもので、同館はスウェーデンで最も来館者の多い博物館のひとつです。

In 1628, a warship departed from Stockholm on its first voyage, carrying sixty-four bronze cannons on two gun decks.
It sailed roughly thirteen hundred meters.
A moderate gust pushed it over, water entered the open gun ports, and the ship sank in front of the crowd assembled to watch.
The king had ordered an additional gun deck during construction, and nobody had been willing to advise him that the design was unstable.
The cold, low-salt water of the harbor preserved the timber remarkably well.
In 1961, the hull was raised almost intact and is now displayed in a purpose-built museum that attracts more than a million visitors annually.
