Roman concrete structures have remained standing for two thousand years, while modern concrete frequently deteriorates within a century.
For a long time the explanation was assumed to be volcanic ash.
Recent analysis has identified an additional factor.
Roman builders mixed the material at high temperatures, which left small white lumps of lime distributed through the concrete.
Engineers had previously regarded these as evidence of careless preparation.
In fact, when water enters a crack, it dissolves a nearby lump, and the solution recrystallizes and seals the gap.
The concrete repairs itself.
Laboratories are now attempting to apply the principle to modern construction in order to extend the service life of buildings.
