The Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place on earth outside the polar regions, and some weather stations there have never recorded any rain at all.

Yet every few years, an unusual rainfall triggers something remarkable.

Seeds that have remained dormant in the soil, occasionally for a decade or more, germinate at the same time, and the desert is covered with flowers across hundreds of square kilometers.

More than two hundred species participate.

The event is not annual and cannot be predicted reliably, so travel agencies are unable to schedule tours in advance.

Botanists study the seeds to understand how they survive such extended periods without water.
