Where a river enters a lake in Venezuela, lightning occurs almost every night.
The storms are generated when warm air from the lake meets cold air descending from the surrounding mountains.
On roughly three hundred nights a year, thousands of flashes appear each hour, and the light is visible from as far as four hundred kilometers away.
Sailors navigated by it for centuries.
In 2010, an unusual drought interrupted the phenomenon for several weeks, and researchers were concerned that it had ended permanently.
It resumed.
The area now holds a world record for the highest concentration of lightning anywhere on the planet.
